In 2003, when Salma Hayek was in San Miguel—down the street from here—filming “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” with Antonio Banderas, she was quoted in the local press as saying, “I think this must be the loveliest town I have ever seen.” The town was enamored of her as well. During breaks while she was making the film, Salma strolled the little streets around the Jardin, followed by a gaggle of children. Their mothers scolded them, telling them to give the star some privacy. But she smiled at the mothers and said, “They are no bother…they are the future of the world.”
